I have always been fascinated by the night sky, but I’ve never wanted to go out and spend hundreds of dollars for one simple telescope. Recently, a large amount of telescopes were donated for educational use, and my science teacher allowed me and some other students to bring one home for a few days.
There were two main things I was interested in looking at: our moon, and Jupiter’s moons. The planet Jupiter has many moons, but only four of them are visible with the kind of telescope I was...

Every year, there’s always some kind of bug going around. I don’t usually get much of a sickness besides a cold, but I recently got something much worse than that and I wasn’t expecting it.
At first, I felt feverish and tired. My parents had me stay home from school a few days. When I awoke the third morning, I could feel lots of pains in my neck. It was almost as if I had a lump in my throat, but it was all over my esophagus. It hurt to swallow and I knew this wasn’t just some bug or virus.
I...

Spelling shouldn't be so strict

In my opinion, America is too focused on proper spelling. I don’t think it’s really that important to spell everything correctly.

I’ve heard that if you scramble up the letters of a word but keep the first and last letters the same, you’d still be able to read it. The brain recognizes words as a whole, not the order of the letters. For instance, look at this sentence: “I htae splnleig.” You can probably tell that I’m actually saying “I hate spelling.”

I’m not saying that we should all just...

Earlier this summer, my family went on a short trip to the Tampa Bay area. Since it's a four or five hour trip, anything for me to do in the car was greatly appreciated. When we were about an hour away, I decided to just close my eyes and try to sleep.

At one point, I was just about to doze off when a loud unsatisfying noise was heard from the rear of the vehicle. My dad, who was driving, carefully pulled over to the side of the highway. We had a flat tire.

We all jumped out to look at it....

Recently, my family and I went on a small vacation to a little spring on a river here in Florida. In this area, the most well-known place like this is Wakulla Springs. Where I went to, only the locals know about it. We heard about it from some relatives.
There was a much smaller crowd than Wakulla Springs. The only thing to do there is to go in the swimming area and jump off the rope swing. The water was mainly pretty cold but some parts were actually kind of warm. I enjoyed the...

Sometimes during the summer the only thing to do is to sit around and be lazy. I just don't have anything to do without school taking up most of my day. To overcome this boredom, I have a bunch of things that can pass the time. One of the most fun things to do is to play board games.

My favorite game is Monopoly, a classic property trading game where you buy spaces on the board and try to be the last player remaining with money. I've played it ever since I can remember and I usually win most...

I have wanted an iPad ever since it came out. The new gadget from Apple is a cross between an iPhone and a laptop. It's a kind of computer, a tablet. But what most people don't know is that there are many handheld tablets out there besides the iPad.

Many of them are cheaper, too. I asked for a tablet similar to the iPad for my birthday which was earlier this month. It uses Google's operating system, Android, which is mainly used for advanced mobile phones.

The gadget itself is about 8 inches...

Our government is set up into three sections: there are the legislative, executive, and judicial branches. Not long ago, I went on a field trip with my school to explore the legislative branch and judicial branch. We went to the Leon County Courthouse, the Florida Capitol, and the Florida Supreme Court.
Everyone first went to the courthouse. We participated in a mock-trial where each student acted as an attorney, witness, defendant, juror, or what I was, the bailiff. After the attorneys...

The first full week of April was also the first week back to school for many students. For me, it was actually 5 days of touring Washington, D.C. I was with about 70 other people from Swift Creek Middle School on a huge field trip to our nation’s capital.
The group left early Monday morning and went for a 16-hour trip up to Dale City, Virginia, where our hotel was. Unfortunately for my bus, Bus 2, the driver accidentally ran over a man when we were only a few minutes from the hotel. Even...

Earlier this month I went on a hike with my family through the Lafayette Heritage Trails.
I’m not the kind of person that enjoys hiking a lot, but I went anyway to give me something to do during my spring break.
What I found on these paths were both pleasant and unpleasant at the same time. At one point, between Lakes Lafayette and Piney-Z, there was a huge mob of bugs. I didn’t know what kind of insect they were or why they were there; all I knew was that they were really annoying. We...
